This unit is self-contained and completely instrumented so that a comprehensive series of experiments can be carried out.
The instrumentation is of high accuracy, including a sensitive electric dynamometer, enabling valid and repeatable test results to be obtained. The engine can be supplied with a special cylinder head fitted with facilities for multi-channel indicator diagram traces. Additional cylinder heads for the gasoline engine of varying compression ratios are included to enable the effects on engine performance to be studied.
All instrumentation and controls are carried on the control panel, of melamine laminate which displays a multi-colour flow diagram giving a clear indication of all measurements which are identified by symbols and located by illuminated tell-tales arranged in a logical sequence to facilitate readings. A standard feature is the torque weighing system incorporating a strain gauge load cell and analogue read out giving very precise results. There is also a multi-point remote reading thermometer system which enables all necessary temperatures, high and low, to be displayed on a single instrument on the panel. All the equipment is exceptionally easy to operate and control and there are interlocks to prevent damage from incorrect operation or malfunction.

The system combines micro processor simplicity of operation with infrared sensor accuracy. It is designed to meet or exceed the OIML class 1 specification for automotive gas analysers, and is the latest development from a proven range of analysis equipment. The unit is equipped with a large brightly illuminated LCD display enabling an easy interaction with the user. Part of the user interface is a built in capability to input alpha numeric data. This gives the operator the ability to configure his own print out and input any vehicle specific data that is required.

Exhaust Calorimeter comprise a multi-tube exhaust gas heat exchanger in which the exhaust gases pass through the tubes and the cooling water flows outside the tubes. An exhaust gas sampling point with shut off cock is provided. The cooling water circuit is fitted with a flowmeter on the inlet and a flow control valve on the outlet side. Note that the unit must be arranged for contra flow - that is the exhaust gas and cooling water must flow through the heat exchanger in opposite directions. Temperature measuring points are provided for exhaust gas inlet and outlet, and cooling water inlet and outlet. The instrumentation is sufficient to enable the heat content of the exhaust gases to be accurately determined.

With suitable ancillary equipment, as specified in subsequent items, the system can be used for data logging, exhaust emissions analysis work and high speed combustion data acquisition programmes. The test facility is intended for installation within the clients acoustic test cell equipped with appropriate services for power, plant cooling water, fuel, ventilation air, exhaust silencing/dispersion and necessary mechanical lifting aids.

Automotive 1 Engine Test Set is the smallest engine test in the ranges. It is a self-contained compact unit designed for easy installation and bench mounting. An automotive alternator is used as a dynamometer to load the engine and dissipate the power in a resistive load bank. The alternator is modified to provide manual control of the load. The test set is supplied as standard with a Briggs and Stratton single cylinder, four stroke, spark ignited, air cooled, side valve engine which is typical of small engines used in a variety of industrial and domestic applications throughout the world. A Diesel engine is offered as a separate alternative .
The engine and dynamometer are carried on a solid steel baseplate resiliently mounted within a steel framework. Included within the framework are the fuel system, which incorporates a fuel tank and fuel solenoid valve, and the air induction system. The instrumentation and control panel is mounted on the front of the frame. The engine is supplied with a cylinder head drilled and tapped to accept a piezo pressure transducer for the easy addition of electronic indicating equipment.

The Single Cylinder Engine Test Bed has been designed to provide a self-contained teaching facility for internal combustion engine technology. Comprehensive instrumentation together with a flexible 'easy to operate' control system allows a wide range of experimental work to be undertaken. A choice of engine types is available to enable students to study the various characteristics of different engine designs and fuel types.
Additional instrumentation and accessories are available from range to expand the experimental capabilities of the basic test bed.
Two main components form the basis of the test bed. First of all the welded steel baseplate complete with D.C. dynamometer, drive coupling and safety guard, spring type anti-vibration mountings, exhaust silencer, flexible pipe and provision for engine mountings. Secondly the framework/console which is positioned over the test bed carrying all instrumentation and controls, fuel system with flow measurement by burette, air flow measurement system, multi-point temperature indicator together with all the electrical circuits necessary for control of the dynamometer and engine.
